We report on a Golgi study of the red nucleus (RN) in the macaque monkey and provide evidence that most RN neurons that project to the cerebellum are not gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactive, but are medium-sized cells with a multipolar or bitufted morphology. The density of the GABA-immunoreactive axonal network in the cerebellar cortex of the same animals was investigated. We found a sparse but consistent innervation of the molecular layer of the cerebellar cortex. These GABA-immunoreactive fibers, in contrast to the axons of the thalamus and reticular formation, were immunolabeled in large numbers, resulting in dense accumulations, presumably terminals, in some specific granule cell zones. The possible functional significance of the intrinsic GABAergic inputs of the RN, which are most probably non-excitatory, is discussed.A simulation model of a population of personal wireless communications devices.
The need for communications network planning and implementation is growing in both the public and the private sectors. The planning of such networks may be considered a technology choice, since it is often dictated by the type of service that is to be provided. To facilitate such planning, this paper describes a population-based, agent-based model of wireless communications devices. These devices are depicted as independent agents, with each being programmed to transmit at a predetermined power level. The model simulates the effects of physical or topological constraints, such as interference, on the performance of a given network.
